RECLAIM DEXA BODY-COMPOSITION ASSESSMENT

Measure what the scale cannot show.

A DEXA scan provides a detailed view of fat mass, lean mass, visceral fat and bone mineral content. RECLAIM helps you understand the results and use them to make better health and performance decisions.

Currently available through participating DEXA providers in British Columbia. Additional locations may be arranged where appropriate.

BEYOND SCALE WEIGHT

Weight tells you how much. DEXA shows you what changed.

Scale weight combines fat, lean tissue, bone and water into a single number. That number can stay relatively stable while your underlying body composition changes.

01

Track fat and lean mass separately

Changes in total weight do not explain which tissues changed. DEXA provides separate estimates of fat mass and lean mass.

02

See regional changes

Whole-body results can show how lean tissue and fat are distributed through the arms, legs and trunk.

03

Establish a reproducible baseline

A baseline gives future scans something meaningful to compare against when monitoring a health, nutrition or training plan.

CONCEPTUAL EXAMPLE

The same scale weight can reflect different changes.

WHO IT IS FOR

A useful baseline for adults making measurable health changes.

DEXA can help separate changes in fat, lean tissue and bone mineral content. Its greatest value comes from answering a specific question or providing a consistent baseline for future comparison.

Follow your imaging provider’s instructions

You will receive instructions regarding clothing, metal objects, food, hydration, recent imaging and anything else required before your appointment.
03

COMPLETE THE SCAN

Lie comfortably while the scanner collects the data

You remain still on an open scanning table while the scanner arm passes over your body. The imaging portion is generally completed within several minutes.
04

RECEIVE YOUR REPORT

Review your body-composition measurements

Your report may include total and regional fat mass, lean mass, estimated visceral fat and whole-body bone mineral information, depending on the equipment and provider.
05

INTERPRET THE RESULTS

Turn the measurements into practical priorities

If you select RECLAIM interpretation, Mike reviews your report alongside your goals and relevant health information, then explains which findings deserve attention and how to monitor them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What to know before booking a DEXA scan.

Preparation, reporting and eligibility can vary between imaging providers. Your facility’s instructions should take precedence over general information on this page.

What is a whole-body DEXA scan?

DEXA stands for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. A whole-body body-composition scan uses two low-energy X-ray beams to differentiate fat mass, lean soft tissue and bone mineral.

How long does the scan take?

The imaging portion is commonly completed within several minutes. Your full appointment may take longer to allow for registration, preparation and review of the provider’s report.

Does the scan hurt?

The scan is non-invasive. You lie still on an open table while the scanning arm passes over your body. Needles, injections and anaesthesia are not normally required.

Does DEXA involve radiation?

Yes. DEXA uses a small amount of ionizing radiation. Although exposure is generally low, the scan should still be completed only when appropriate and according to the imaging provider’s safety procedures.

Can I complete a DEXA scan during pregnancy?

DEXA is generally avoided during pregnancy because it uses ionizing radiation. Tell the imaging provider if you are pregnant or may be pregnant before the appointment.

How should I prepare for the scan?

Follow the instructions supplied by your imaging facility. You may be asked to wear clothing without metal and remove jewellery or other metal objects. Food, hydration, exercise and recent contrast imaging can also affect preparation requirements.

Do I need a physician’s referral?

Many private body-composition providers do not require a physician’s referral. Requirements depend on the facility, location and type of DEXA examination being performed.

Is this the same as a diagnostic bone-density test?

No. A whole-body body-composition scan provides bone mineral information, but a medically indicated osteoporosis assessment typically uses dedicated measurements of areas such as the hip and spine with clinical interpretation.

How frequently should I repeat the scan?

The appropriate interval depends on your reason for testing, expected rate of change and whether the result will influence a decision. Repeating scans too frequently may add cost without providing meaningful new information.

Can RECLAIM diagnose a condition from my scan?

RECLAIM provides pharmacist-led education and health guidance. The service does not replace diagnostic imaging interpretation, medical diagnosis or care from your physician or other qualified healthcare providers.
